Decalcification is 100% preventable

Brushing teeth with orthodontic braces 45 degree technique

50% of patients affected

50% of orthodontic patients develop at least one white spot of decalcification, compared to only 11% without braces.

How it happens

These spots appear around brackets when plaque builds up and bacterial acids remove calcium from the enamel.

The good news

With diligent hygiene, these spots are 100% preventable! Brushing after every meal is the key.

The 45° Method in 5 Steps

Brush your teeth after EVERY meal and snack — not just morning and night!

1

Rinse

First rinse with water to dislodge food debris.

2

Position at 45°

Place the brush at a 45° angle to the gums, with bristles aimed toward the gum line.

3

Brush 2-3 minutes

Gentle circular motions. Above AND below each bracket.

4

Interdental brushes

Clean around each bracket and under the wires with an interdental brush.

5

Floss or water flosser

Don't forget the back of your teeth, your tongue, and the spaces between your teeth.
