Orthodontics with Surgery: Treating Complex Malocclusions
At Dr. David Benguira, we understand that some malocclusions require more than just orthodontic treatment to be corrected. For cases where a significant jaw misalignment is present, orthodontics combined with maxillofacial surgery may be the ideal solution. This type of treatment not only realigns the teeth, but also repositions the jaws, improving both oral functionality and facial aesthetics.
Orthodontics with Surgery
Orthodontics with maxillofacial surgery is used to correct severe skeletal misalignments when bone growth has stopped. While orthodontics focuses on aligning the teeth, surgery repositions the jaws, allowing the patient to regain essential functions such as chewing, nasal breathing, and closing the mouth at rest. By moving the jaws, the appearance and proportions of the face are also improved, which can have a significant impact on the patient's self-confidence.
Surgery, in addition to correcting skeletal anomalies, allows to reduce the overall duration of orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics must be associated with surgery to facilitate the surgeon's work and guarantee the best dental relationships after the operation.
Dental Implants
In some cases, dental implants may be used in addition to orthodontic surgery. Implants, placed directly into the jawbone, replace missing teeth and provide long-lasting stability. They play a key role in restoring oral functionality, while maintaining the alignment of teeth achieved through orthodontic treatment.
Who needs orthodontic treatment with surgery?
Patients who are 16 to 18 years of age or older and have completed their growth are typically candidates for this type of treatment. These patients often have a jaw misalignment that is too severe to be corrected by simply moving the teeth. Although orthodontic preparation can begin before growth is complete, it is crucial that all growth is complete before surgery can be performed.
How is the treatment carried out?
Treatment begins with the fitting of a fixed orthodontic appliance ("braces"), which the patient wears for 6 to 18 months. During this preparation phase, Dr. David Benguira aligns the teeth to an ideal dental arch shape between the top and bottom, which can sometimes make the jaw misalignment more visible temporarily.
About two months before the operation, the patient sees the surgeon again with recent casts to validate the planned intervention. A few days before the operation, hooks or buttons are placed in the mouth by the orthodontist. These devices are used by the surgeon to fix elastics for retention while the bone heals, generally for four weeks.
Four to six weeks after surgery, the patient returns to see Dr. David Benguira to resume the final orthodontic adjustments, while jaw mobility gradually returns to normal. Approximately six months of orthodontic finishing are required after surgery to ensure perfect tooth alignment and optimal occlusion.
